10-year-old blood recipient takes Canada on adventure
Hunter demonstrates online the impact blood donors have on his life this summer
August 5, 2014 (CANADA) – A young blood recipient is letting Canadians tag along online during his summer holidays to raise awareness about the ongoing need for blood. Hunter has Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare blood disorder, and he needs blood transfusions every three weeks to survive. The 10-year-old and his mom, Carrie, are posting Hunter’s summer diary on Facebook this month. They plan to share everything from Hunter’s medical visits and blood transfusions to the family fun made possible thanks to blood donors
“Camping, playing sports and going on sun-filled adventures are things most Canadian children enjoy and may take for granted,” says Carrie. “For Hunter, these opportunities exist because of everyday Canadians taking the time to donate blood. Without them, he wouldn’t be able to enjoy the little things.”
Hunter has received 172 blood transfusions and will need donated blood for the rest of his life.
“Hunter’s story is especially important during the summer months because he is reminding us that we need to give before we head off on our own summer adventures. Often warm weather results in many unfilled and missed appointments,” says Mark Donnison, Vice-President of Donor Relations. “The national inventory has already seen a concerning decrease in supply this summer and for patients like Hunter, a steady supply is critical.”
The need for blood never takes a holiday. Canadian Blood Services needs to fill more than 50,000 appointments over the next 30 days to meet hospital demand across Canada.
