Last year, I donated for the first time after someone I loved needed transfusions when they were facing multiple myeloma. I went into that experience thinking that I was playing a part in helping someone else's health, not my own.
I donated plasma because that is what the local Canadian Blood Services location accepts. A few weeks later, I was notified that the routine screening that is run on these donations showed abnormal proteins in my blood, alerting me to a problem I didn't know I had.
After extensive follow-up testing, I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma myself at the age of 43.
Had I not donated, I may not have learned about my cancer for some time. I'm fortunate that my cancer was caught early and I have been able to start treatment.
Knowing that I may be a future recipient of blood products, I am more grateful than ever for those who have, and will, contribute to Canada's Lifeline.
