Razia Seman
Winnipeg, Manitoba
“I think it’s important to give back to the community,” says Razia Seman. “By volunteering, I can make a difference in the lives of others.”
An accomplished international student at the University of Winnipeg, Razia has earned many scholarships. One of them is from the University of Winnipeg Golden Key Chapter, part of an international non-profit organization that prioritizes both academic achievement and volunteerism. The Chapter is also a Canadian Blood Services partner.
This connection inspired Razia to begin volunteering for Canadian Blood Services in 2019, initially at recruitment events and then at blood donor clinics. As the Chapter’s Vice President Events during 2019–2020, she organized and led on-campus recruitment events and helped develop an overall vision for the NextGen Lifeline in-community team for Manitoba.
“I love being part of the team,” says Razia. “It makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger.”
Born in Ethiopia, Razia has also studied in China. Her travels have given her a special appreciation of the importance of helping others.
“So far, I’ve been unable to donate blood because my hemoglobin levels are too low. I changed my diet in hopes I’ll be eligible one day, but in the meantime, I can contribute by encouraging others to donate. As the saying goes, it’s in you to give.”
