Jenna Hauck
British Columbia and Yukon
A blood donor and photojournalist with the Chilliwack Progress, Jenna contacted Canadian Blood Services last year with an idea: to organize a group in honour of her late co-worker, Penny Lett, a long-time donor and advocate of the blood system.
To recognize Penny’s dedication to saving lives, Jenna and Canadian Blood Services partnered to create a two-month blood clinic during the months of July and August 2013. Jenna became the Partners for Life champion of the “In Memory of Penny Lett” donation team, and encouraged community members through newspaper articles and social media to make their donations count toward the team’s goal of 125 donations (to match the number Penny had given before passing away). Jenna also attended blood donor clinics to inform Chilliwack donors of the blood drive, and recruited the support of local businesses to promote the cause.
As a result of Jenna’s efforts, the blood drive received enormous support from the community: it collected 420 units in its first year alone, far surpassing the original goal of 125. This year, the group’s pledge is for 500 units.
