Ilan Shapiro
Ottawa, Ont.
"I believe giving life is the greatest form of charity I can give to others. People in our community need blood regularly and others could need it in emergency situations. It’s important to support Canada’s Lifeline because I feel it’s our duty to assist all who need blood and blood products."
Ilan generously gives of himself to Canada’s Lifeline in multiple ways: as a donor; a Partners for Life Champion; and a recruiter at his workplace, Canada Revenue Agency — Assessment and Benefit Services Branch and Taxpayer Services and Debt Management.
Ilan has trained and brought other recruiters on board to assist him in booking appointments for his office donation events. He pledges and tracks donation numbers, helps bring groups from other workplace locations via the Canadian Blood Services shuttle bus, and is committed to making every event warm and welcoming.
Energetic and innovative, Ilan also helps develop communication materials to get the word out to colleagues about blood donation. Most recently, he recommended a digital advertising format in his building to reach potential donors and engage returning donors in a new way.
As well, to commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, Ilan and his predecessor champion celebrated their 50th and 100th donations respectively — in an effort to recognize other Canadians’ commitment to patients across the country.
