Being an official blood donor is something that I have longed for my entire adult life. I have always wanted to be a blood donor to pay back for the selfless act someone did back in 1977, before I was born. I wasn't able to donate due to living in England during the Mad Cow outbreak and I constantly checked the Canadian Blood Services website to see if there had been any change. The moment I heard that the ban had been lifted, I went straight to the booking page and scheduled my first donation.
The reason it's so important to me is because strangers saved my mother's life. In 1977, my mother suffered a ruptured ectopic pregnancy. She was out on the ski hill when it ruptured. She was rushed to hospital, where she lost over half of her blood. Without the selfless act of a blood donor, she would've lost her life and I wouldn't be here.
I look forward to being a lifetime donor for as long as I am able to.
